License
BackupMunk Enterprise works without a license. A license unlocks the premium features. Licensing is all or nothing: any valid license unlocks every premium feature. What a license unlocks Capability Without a license With a license Scheduled Docker Compose and file backups Yes Yes Encryption on the client Yes Yes Uploads through the server (relayed) Yes Yes Direct upload from clients to storage No Yes Destinations per backup 1 Several, with a full copy in each Retention Yes Yes Restores from the web console No Yes Downloading archives from the console Yes Yes Offline recovery with bmrecover Yes Yes Audit log and audit retention Yes Yes Shipping audit events to syslog or a webhook No Yes Single sign-on (OIDC) Yes Yes Email and Pushover notifications Yes Yes Agent auto-update and fleet management Yes Yes Without a license, every signed-in user sees a banner, and the premium controls are locked with a link to Settings → License. The limits are enforced by the server, not just hidden in the console. [!NOTE] A missing or expired license never locks you out of your data. The bmrecover offline recovery tool is always free and needs no license (see Restore backups). How many hosts your license covers Your license covers a number of hosts: the plan's included hosts plus any extra hosts you bought. Only active clients count, so disabling or deleting a host you no longer protect frees its place. Older license keys and installations without a license have no host limit. Settings → License shows how many hosts are active and how many the license covers. If more hosts are active than the license covers: Every signed-in user sees a banner, and administrators get an email (notification More active hosts than the license allows). This is also recorded in the audit log. You have 14 days to fix it: disable or remove hosts, or add hosts to your license in the store and paste the new activation token under Settings → License. After 14 days, new agents can't enroll until the count fits. The agent's enroll command says why. [!NOTE] Hosts that are already enrolled are never affected. They keep backing up and restoring whatever the host count, so a billing problem never stops your backups. Buy a license Buy BackupMunk Enterprise from the Sage store at store.sageisg.com. Activate the license In the store, open your license page and choose Copy activation token. In BackupMunk, open Settings → License and paste the token into Signed license token. Alternatively, download the license file from the store (license.lic) and choose Load license file. Choose Activate. The license takes effect immediately, with no restart. Status then shows the plan, the license reference, the issue date and the expiry date (or Never (perpetual)). [!TIP] The short LE-XXXX-… value in the store is a license reference that identifies your license. It isn't what you paste. If you paste it, BackupMunk explains which value to use instead. A license that is invalid, for another product, expired, revoked, or not valid for your BackupMunk version is rejected with the reason, and isn't saved. To replace a license, paste the new token and choose Activate again. Remove license removes it. Older license keys License keys issued before BackupMunk was sold through the store still work. Paste them into the same Signed license token field. If both a store license and an older key are installed, the store license is used, and the older key is kept as a fallback in case the store license stops being valid. How the license is checked The license token is signed by the store and verified on the server itself, so the server doesn't depend on the store to start or to stay licensed from moment to moment. In the background, the server checks in with store.sageisg.com to pick up renewals, revocations and suspensions. If the server can't reach the store, it keeps working offline for a grace period set by the store. On Settings → License, the License server box shows the last check and the date until…
